Sancha, filha de D. Sancho I, no s\u00edtio onde existia o seu pa\u00e7o, em 1222, sendo seu superior o Frade Zacarias. D. Beatriz de Gusm\u00e3o, mulher de D. Afonso III, mandou construir-lhe nova igreja, conclu\u00edda em 1355, talvez porque a primitiva fosse demasiado pequena, \u00e0 qual se acede por um p\u00f3rtico ogival encimado pelas armas de D. Dinis. No reinado de D. Manuel renovou-se o claustro e lavrou-se o p\u00f3rtico da casa do cap\u00edtulo (este est\u00e1 classificado como Monumento Nacional desde 1910). No \u00e2ngulo noroeste do claustro existe um rel\u00f3gio de sol, de m\u00e1rmore fino de G\u00e9nova, oferecido a esta casa pelo cronista alenquerense Dami\u00e3o de G\u00f3is, no ano de 1557. O Convento de S. Francisco, de Alenquer, foi sempre venerado e protegido pela Coroa, como Convento de posse real. Em 1580 D. Ant\u00f3nio, prior do Crato, depois de aclamado em Santar\u00e9m, foi aqui reconhecido como rei de Portugal. Com os terramotos de 1531, 1755 e o \u00faltimo de 1969, o Convento sofreu danos dif\u00edceis de reparar.
